Artist : Mahair Goh Four years after creating Set Sail, Mahair Goh returns to the sea with Return Voyage, a deeply personal continuation of a journey that began during one of the most uncertain periods in recent history.

Created as the world emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic, Set Sail symbolised hope, courage and the determination to move forward into an uncertain future. The lone vessel setting out towards the horizon reflected a universal desire to begin again, to rediscover dreams, embrace new opportunities and find strength after hardship.

Return Voyage completes that journey.

Where Set Sail represented departure, Return Voyage represents homecoming. The vessel returns not as it once was, but carrying the experiences of the journey: lessons learned, challenges overcome, memories gathered and a deeper sense of gratitude.

Drawing upon Mahair Goh’s childhood memories of growing up in a Malaysian fishing village, the sea remains a powerful metaphor for life. Sometimes calm and still, sometimes unpredictable and turbulent, it reflects the changing circumstances we encounter throughout our own journeys. Yet through every changing tide, we continue forward.

The returning vessel therefore represents more than simply coming home. It is a symbol of resilience, fulfilment and renewal, returning from uncertainty with greater wisdom, strength and appreciation for what truly matters.

There is also a sense of abundance within the homecoming. Just as a fishing vessel returns to shore carrying the harvest of its voyage, Mahair Goh reflects upon the idea that the true rewards of any journey are not measured only by what we gain materially, but by the experiences, relationships, lessons and gratitude we bring home with us.

From Set Sail to Return Voyage, the story comes full circle, from uncertainty to gratitude, from hope to fulfilment, and from departure to homecoming.

Through Return Voyage, Mahair Goh leaves viewers with a message for the journeys still ahead: may we have the courage to sail into the unknown, the resilience to weather changing tides, and the wisdom to return with something meaningful gained along the way.

"May every journey lead to a meaningful destination, and may every return bring a bountiful harvest.”
